Software, Goods, and Services Recommendations

Desktop Applications

Brave: Free and open source web browser, developed with privacy in mind and multiple tools to prove it. Available for Linux, Windows, Android, and others.

LibreOffice: Free and open source office suite that’s compatible with Microsoft Office. Includes a word processor, spreadsheets, database tools, presentation application, and more. Available for Windows, Linux, OpenBSD, and more.

Operating Systems

Bazzite: Fedora Atomic Desktop-based Linux distribution with a focus on gaming. Bazzite has versions for desktops, laptops, and handheld consoles including (but not limited to) Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and MSI Claw.

Fedora: Tried and true general-use Linux distribution and the foundation of Bazzite, with spins for nearly every kind of computer system you can think of.

Social Media/Blogging

WordPress: Duh. Open source self-hosted blog software that powers an out-sized portion of the public internet, drama involving the CEO notwithstanding. It works, it’s versatile, and included in most webhosting packages.

Fediverse Sites and Services (ActivityPub based)

Mastodon: Federated alternative to Facebook, Twitter, and the other mainstream social networks. General purpose, and one of the most popular Fediverse services.

PixelFed: Federated alternative to Instagram. Photo-centric.

Loops: Federated alternative to Tiktok by the creators of PixelFed. Specializes in short-form videos. Still under heavy development.

Bookwyrm: Federated alternative to Goodreads. Centered on books and reviews without the ads and privacy issues.

Fediverse Sites and Services (non-ActivityPub)

BlueSky: Another federated social network that shares many features with Twitter. While I’m on it, I recommend using Mastodon and other ActivityPub sites (PixelFed, Loops, Bookwyrm, etc.) because of the fact that BlueSky is owned by a privately held corporation, which inherently makes it ripe for censorship and manipulation as Twitter, Facebook, and their ilk.

Mobile Applications

Open Vibe: Open source client for interacting with Mastodon, BlueSky, Threads, and Nostr social networks in one convenient interface. It allows posts to each network individually as well as simultaneous posts to 2, 3, or all 4 at once.
